The day my oldest Mate broke my heart

by Adam Bean on March 11, 2014

He’s gone Mate, Dad just passed away.

I couldn’t talk, I felt like someone had just smashed me in the stomach with a sledgehammer and completely knocked the wind out of me. It was my brother. My Dad had just lost his battle with cancer.

I knew this day was coming, he had battled hard for two long years. But it just got too much for him.

I handed the phone to my wife and began to cry. I have never grieved so hard in my life my oldest mate had just broken my heart.

When my Dad died part of me died with him. It had too we had been so close for so long.

The last time we talked my dad asked me to speak at his funeral and thank my Mum for what she had done for him.

Some how I managed to do it. What he asked me to say is the only part of what I said that I actually remember. The rest is just a just a blur. Fortunately it must have made sense as one of my Aunties commented on how powerful my words were. If only I could remember them.

As hard as losing my Dad was for me I still consider myself fortunate. I have to. He would literally kick my ass if I thought anything else. My Dad lived for 65 years and we had a lot of great times together.

Shaving your head in reality means fuck all, it’s just a gesture. When I see stories on Facebook, the news or anywhere else about young kids losing one of their parents, or worse still parents losing a young child it literally makes me want to curl up in a ball and cry again.

That pain is something someone that age should never ever have to endure.

I don’t write this post to try and guilt anyone into donating, my only hope is that it resonates with people that have already suffered the same situation and they want to try and relieve the pain a little for others.

I know one day they will find a cure for this insidious fucking disease, which cut my Dad down in his prime. Until that day each year I will continue to shave my head, in the hope that it brings a little relief to someone else.

Cheers Beanie

What is professionalism really?

by Adam Bean on February 25, 2014

Don’t be afraid to show your flaws.Beanies Small Business Marketing Ideas, what is professionalism? Imperfections are real and people respond to real.” Rework

When I create a video things don’t always go to plan. You should know by now that I am a boilermaker by trade and guess what?? Boilermakers swear! Shock horror I know. Watch the video below.

Now when you watch the video your are probable going to wonder, why would Beanie post a video like that? I mean I am suppose to be portraying a professional image aren’t I? Well what I call professional doesn’t really fit with the status quo.

The business world is full of “professionals” who wear the uniform and try to seem perfect. In truth, they just come off as stiff and boring. No one can relate to people like that.” Rework

When I wrote the book Isometric I devoted quite a deal of time to teaching people how to be a natural in front of the camera. I did that for a very good reason. So firstly lets take a look at this video.

I repeat

The business world is full of “professionals” who wear the uniform and try to seem perfect. In truth, they just come off as stiff and boring. No one can relate to people like that.” Rework

Or as I so eloquently like to describe them, educated f#ckwits.

I wanted to ensure that whoever read Isometric didn’t fall into the trap of becoming boring. Now they don’t have to swear and carry on like me. In fact there would be very few people that I would actually recommend it too. Mainly because  they aren’t like that in real life, so if they try it’s going to look fake.

All they have to do is be themselves. Not a cardboard cut out of what they think they should be like. This won’t happen overnight (becoming professional and not boring), point in case I started out stiff and boring, because…

I didn’t know any better. This is the very first video that I ever uploaded. You could not get any more stiff and boring.

The reason I post video’s like that stuff up when I am filming is because, I don’t want clients that are easily offended. Better they know up front exactly what they are dealing with so that none of their (or my) precious time gets wasted.

I just don’t have the time or patience to work with people that can’t understand what I do, or why I do it. They either love me or hate me straight up, and guess what?

That’s life.

Now this thought is probable screaming through your head right now. “You only get one chance at a first impression.” Really? I don’t know who came up with that, but I do know that it is one of the most moronic sayings that has ever been repeated.

The flaws in that saying are endless, but this one sticks out like the proverbial dogs you know what.

Who gets to decide what a professional first impression is? I will tell you who. The people you want as clients that’s who!

After all what turns one person on, pisses another off. The impression you want to create straight up is one that will draw in those that you really want to work with, and make the other turn and run for the hills.

Lastly before I go, let me give you one more example of how this works. This is what a project manager I was working for said to me recently.

I will never die wondering exactly what you mean Beanie

And I hope you never will either.

Cheers Beanie
