Video is Killing the SEO star!

by Adam Bean on June 8, 2012

If you are new here let me fill you in on what I have been doing.

Lately Beanies Small Business Marketing IdeasI have been running a little experiment using video for social media marketing.

Now this is particularly relevant to you (for two reasons) if you are a local bricks and mortar business owner looking to improve your marketing, and your position yourself on the front page of Google’s search results.

  1. This will show you how to quickly get your business on the front page of Google where you deserve to be.
  2. If your competition starts doing this, and you don’t take some action quickly.

YOU ARE TOAST!

So what have I been doing?

Long story short I have been able to rank for highly competitive search terms like small business marketing in Australia, with easy to make video’s, and a couple of simple SEO techniques.

This is the gist of how our using Video for Social Media Marketing experiment got started. I say our for a reason. You see this experiment all came about because my partner in crime on the Local Social Business Show Podcast, (Alistair from The Full Noise) has been on my back for quite some time to get on to Google+, even though I didn’t see much point to it.

I should have known better. If Alistair says that something is good, and that I need to check it out. Then the odds are well and truly stacked towards him being right. And right he was!

I did a Google + Hang out with a little SEO and guess what happened??

BOOM I ranked (at lightening speed) for a highly competitive search term that I have been chasing for over 12 months. Suddenly I am on the front page of Google.

Now at the present time there are many so called SEO experts that are literaly scratching their heads trying to workout what Goolge actually wants at the moment, given what has happened with the now famous Panda update. Let me make this very clear…

I do not profess to be an SEO expert. What I do know how to do is test and measure. As I said in an earlier post I got the idea for this experiment (which is to cross local search with a Google + Hangout) from another post that talked about crossing YouTube video’s with local search. I mean now that you look at it, it’s a no brainer really. If Google are making video streaming possible, do you think it could possible be because they want people to use it to create fresh relevant search content?

I know what you are thinking now…

Damn you are brilliant Beanie!

Stop it you are embarrassing me, Lol. So who in particular is this relevant to? I mean surely not every business could use this strategy?

You bet they can and I am going to prove it to you with a highly boring search term which is…

Mobile Welding in Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads. Why would you chase that term Beanie?

Well the Social Tradie is no Myth. I am a boilermaker by trade and I can actually weld. So today I did my #TaDa Friday video chasing that term to prove that even a local welding business could use Video for Social Media Marketing. But hang on a second it gets even weirder. Guess what I found when I searched on that term?

A local mobile welding company using that exact term, with wait for it….

A You Tube Video!

If two boilermakers can get online and create marketing video’s, what is stopping you? So time for you to check the video’s out, and for me to get on with my experiment. You can watch them both below.

And I want to see a link to your video in the comments below as soon as it is live. Don’t tell me you can’t do it! If you need a hand just drop a comment, and I will show you how to get your video done today!

Cheers Beanie, the Social Tradie

Hi Beanie, great post. Now tell me. Are you suggesting that a google hangout video would rank better than a video I have shot with a camera and loaded up to youtube? Just checking.

Hey Krishna, from the testing I have done that is absolutely what I am saying. I always record them (Hangout’s) on to YouTube as well. For some reason Google is putting a lot of weight behind Hangout Video’s. Guessing it is to do with fresh content. A YouTube video you don’t really know how fresh it is, but when you run a live Hangout, it’s still kicking and straight off of the trawler so to speak. Try it and see what happens, it is super simple to do. Alistair and I ran a little test with the pod-cast last week and the results were astounding. There also seems to be a lot of local authority when recording a video via the SmartCam app, pretty sure it’s because it is location based. Google Small Business Marketing Ideas Australia, I own 6 out of the ten videos for that term. Video really is killing the SEO star! Cheers Beanie
